Why Protein Is Non-Negotiable on GLP-1 Medication
5 min read
When you start a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, the most obvious change is that you’re simply not as hungry. That’s the point. But eating less overall makes one nutrient surprisingly easy to under-eat: protein.
Why protein matters more, not less
During weight loss, your body can lose muscle alongside fat. Getting enough protein is one of the main ways to help protect lean muscle while the number on the scale moves. When your total food intake drops, the proportion of it that’s protein has to go up to keep you in the same place.
The tricky part: protein is filling, and GLP-1 medication already makes you full fast. So the instinct to “just eat when hungry” can quietly leave you short.
A simple rule: protein first
The easiest habit that works: eat the protein on your plate first. When your appetite window is small, you want the most important thing to land before you fill up. If you only manage half the meal, you’ve still got the part that counts.
Practical ways to hit your target
- Anchor every meal to a protein. Eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, chicken, fish, tofu, or a protein smoothie.
- Make small count. A small portion that’s protein-dense beats a large one that isn’t. Our small-portion collection is built around this.
- Sip it when you can’t chew it. On low days, a protein smoothie can carry the load.
- Spread it out. Several smaller protein hits across the day are often easier than one big serving.
When nothing sounds good
On the roughest days, don’t chase a “proper meal.” A yoghurt, a couple of bites of something gentle, or a smoothie all count. Consistency over the week matters more than any single meal.
